Innate well-being

'Be Yourself!' 'OK but who the hell am I?'

Authenticity is a big buzz word. “Be yourself” we keep getting told. And that would be great of course…

if we knew who we are.

The more I coach people and the more I explore the nature of the self and reality and our understanding of ourselves, the clearer it is to me that if we think we know who we are then we are surely missing out.

It is the opposite of accepted wisdom (build yourself up, create your identity, stamp your personality on a meeting or the world) but in my experience the most d…

Who takes the bins out in your house?

[Disclaimer: this isn’t an article about male and female jobs because we all moved way beyond that long ago didn’t we..? Didn’t we…?]

After decades of searching for a solution to anxiety, confusion and general ill-at-ease-ness, I came across something called (among other things) ’The inside out understanding’.

This states that there is no objective reality.

It tells us that all experience is thought brought alive in consciousness.

It tells us that nothing we perceive is real.

The slight problem with …

When Perfect met Potential.

Harry and Sally. A man and a woman, opposite in every way, on paper resolutely incompatible. To begin with they are unable to even be in the same room without arms folding, eyes rolling, doors slamming.

Yet, as they get to know each other, it is obvious: they are meant to be together.

So it is with perfect and potential.

At first, they seem utterly incompatible.

Perfection. Everything exactly right, right now.

Potential. The end of what is.

Surely the two cannot even exist at the same moment, let alon…

Thank you

There was a girl, let’s call her Everygirl, who thought that she wasn’t OK. She thought she was missing something. She felt lonely, scared, inadequate. She believed what she thought about who she was. She thought that there was something wrong with her. She thought that she had to avoid the things that were scaring her, hide herself behind make up and likes. She tried to get control of this life through food or approval or love or friends or exercise or good marks. She tried to blank out her min…

The new integrity

There is a revolution underway that is changing every aspect of the way we understand reality and the way our minds create it.

It is an ancient revolution because in the oldest cultural, religious, philosophical and academic texts from all over the world we find verses and lines describing how our separation from what we perceive is an illusion and that underneath the vagaries of our mind is an essence that is unchanging and true.

It is also modern because it is fast gathering pace in the most adv…

What do you need?

Have you thought recently how you don’t need anything?

No me neither.

In fact, I need a LOT of things. I need my health for a start. I need to be alive obviously. I need the people I love to be alive of course. And I need them to love me and to tell me they love me. I need my income well actually I need a bit more. I need a job that I like. I need this house that I live in. I need a partner. I need my children to be healthy and not bullied. I need the weather to be a bit warmer and less rainy than…

Nature abhors a vacuum (and how that relates to everything you ever want)

The definition of a vacuum is true empty space - an environment with nothing in it.

It is the attempt to create a nothingness within the all pervasive somethingness of the universe.

Nothing cannot exist in nature because nature immediately fills that nothing with something. Trying to separate out from everything creates a state so profoundly unstable that it immediately disappears.

And this has profound implications for us and what we want.

Let’s start with the fact that the separate human self is e…

New Year. New You? No you?

My Facebook feed has been full of people promising to make me the best I can be - happier, wealthier, fitter, more attractive, more successful, more popular.

They are coming to the right place because a lot of the time I believe I need to be better and have more.

I have all the shelter, food, drink and wifi I need so, according to Maslow’s infamous hierarchy of human needs, my focus is now ‘self actualisation’: affirming my identity, asserting my self, making my mark on the world, celebrating my m…

You say that everything is a projection so tell me how to stop projecting this crock of shit…

The coaching I do is based on the principle that our reality is created from the inside out. That our moment to moment reality is thought brought alive in consciousness. That everything we experience, including ourself is only ever a creation within the changing energy of our mind.

And the minute we start to look at this in relation to what we actually experience then this theory completely falls apart.

“Yes I get how it is all created from the inside but…

… my boss really is a bully, everyone agre…

Living the Dream

I’m a coach. A life coach. I earn my living from helping people with their life.

Which would be great. If I had the slightest idea what ‘life’ is.

Because whatever way we look at it, the life we are living is an apparition, created from moment to moment within our consciousness, shifting and morphing in accordance with the changing energy of mind.

Sometimes our life seems perfect, everything as it should be, we are surrounded by love and opportunity. Sometimes it all looks dreadful, that we are a t…
